Storage and retrieval systems can be created using many different methods and technologies. Some of the most used technologies/storage systems include automatic lifts, mini-loads, shuttles, auto-store solutions, vertical lifts, and surprisingly, regular manual shelving units.
How do our machines; ClassicMat™, our traditional VLM, and EffiMat®, the new generation of vertical lifts, compare to other storage and retrieval systems?
Can they work with, and be integrated with, other storage and retrieval systems?
EffiMat® and ClassicMat™ vs. other storage and retrieval systems Storage and retrieval systems can be easily compared when using the same performance measures. These omparisons are generally based on performance indicators such as in/output per hour or storage capacity in SKU (stock keeping unit).
ClassicMat™ as a storage and retrieval system works best with relatively low performance requirements on orderlines of max 60-100 per hour. This is still significantly faster than manual shelving solutions, which often have a max performance of 25-10 orderlines per hour in/out. The performance of ClassicMat™ can be improved by 50-100% by adding more machines in the same retrieval zones.
A traditional vertical lift has a limited physical integration possibility with other storage and retrieval systems. The capacity of a ClassicMat™ varies according to the height of the storage system, but does not compare to the larger mini-load and shuttle solutions.
One of the greatest advantages of a ClassicMat™, and other traditional vertical lifts, is the extremely compact storage. If speed is an important performance indicator, other systems work better.
EffiMat® is a new generation of vertical lifts. They have a higher level of performance than traditional vertical lifts, with potential for up to 400 orderlines in/out per hour. Therefore, EffiMat® as a storage and retrieval system is fully comparable to much more expensive storage systems such as shuttles, mini-loads, etc. It would take four mini-loads – and thereby a significant financial investment – to achieve the same performance and speed as one EffiMat®. The capacity is comparable to a traditional vertical lift.
As a storage and retrieval system, EffiMat® is extremely flexible and can be integrated with nearly any other storage and retrieval system. This is possible because of the revolutionary in-out feed principle, which allows exchange of goods on the sides of the EffiMat®. The possibilities are nearly endless. An EffiMat® might work as an extraordinarily fast and ergonomically correct retrieval station in front of a mini-load system. This would function as a replacement for the large and expensive buffer-setups of rolling bands that are usually required for mini-load systems. When implemented correctly, mini-loads, shuttles and auto-store solutions have a high capacity and performance as a storage systems.
In a situation with very high requirements for storage capacity, these systems – integrated with an EffiMat® – may be the best solution. However, it does require a higher financial investment.
